Snapchat, Instagram and mobile journalism, a possible marriage.
Two initial reasoning: talking about snapchat is hard. Understanding snapchat is a business.
Doing so much trouble for something that does not stay and disappears within seconds is a situation that we, communicators of a certain age, can not bear. I have to admit: I followed the panels at Galway 2017 by Yusuf Omar and his wife Sumaiya, but I came out with broken bones. I replicated at Galway 2018, at Mojofest, and I opened a world in my mind because I understood how to use these two apps in order to create, both with Instagram and with Snapchat, a unique language.
I also understood this in many months of studying the Hashtag Our Stories project that Yusuf and Sumaiya are carrying out with chilling results (naturally positive). From their genius came a new and inimitable language of vertical video that starts from the premise that both Snapchat and Instagram are editing tools to be fully exploited to “pre-edit” video or to film in an innovative, immediate, exciting and near way.
What I understood about Instagram.
The assembly is linear, the story is made of small shots, the possible graphic additions are colorful, cute, sometimes excessive, but effective. The world of Intagram is a world that you can live starting from the stories, film them with the sense of a story, give them a sense of meaning or time, then extract them saving the story and receiving a pre-mounted photo in their own roll of photos. whole, of what was put in the stories in the 24 hours before. A way, this, to shoot a story close, alive, intimate, fast, then exit the app and get a video (which can be the story done and finished or a part of something bigger) already ready . Instagram is also very strong for the birth of IGTV that I talked about in this article, but there is also another reason in my opinion.
The “positive” trend of Instagram.
I speak of a trend of this social that requires to post more positive. Simple reason: being, as a basis, a social visual, we can not easily throw a negative photo to the web as much as, instead, it is easy to vomit a negative text. Facebook, on the other hand, being born textual, it is more natural to use it as an outlet for what is worse for us. Simply because we have to put the text first and then the photo, not the photo first and then the text. It is not a negligible discussion and it is not secondary to think that Instagram, as a editing tool, touches us more closely because it requires us to be positive.
Snapchat, however, beats everyone.
Few have understood the visionarity of Snapchat regarding the video language. Many, including myself, are struggling to understand why I have to hack so much on an app to make a video that soon disappears and still has no public outlook, unless you are a phenomenon. Yet the shots of Snaptchat are the most colorful, enrichable, manageable. The great thing that has happened in these hours is very well explained in this moment of Twitter.

What is it? This is a significant step forward made to Spectacles, so far considered a gadget of little importance. Now a snap shot with the glasses can be passed on the phone and exported from the application in different formats. One of these is full screen and can be inserted into the stories that are produced even with normal editing and in the old and dear 16/9. With a move, which I hope will become a trend, they have saved from mold thousands of glasses that are still in their warehouses and transformed Snapchat, definitely into a magnificent editing tool like Instagram and beyond.
